Getting Educated En Español, Spanish-language Schools Provide Learning Options

Sitting in a private classroom on the lower slope of the Pichincha volcano, more than 9,000 feet above sea level in the Ecuadorian Andes, I am unaffected by the thin air. But the conjugation is driving me insane. Zayra Ibujes, one of several language instructors at the Amazonas Ecuador Spanish School, has just asked me to conjugate the verb aullar (to howl).
“Yo aullo. Tu aullas. El aulla …“After correctly rattling off, “1 howl, you howl, he howls,” I mispronounce the “we howl” conjugation.
“No, no, no, señor,” says, Señorita Ibujes, correcting me in Spanish for the l5th time this morning. “Nosotros aullamos.” 1 stifle the urge to lean back in my chair and aullo!
Amazonas is one of more than 60 Spanish-language schools in Quito, Ecuador. A mild year-round climate, relatively safe surroundings, a clearly spoken Spanish dialect and low prices make Ecuador’s capital the place to be for Spanish-language learning.

Depending on which school you choose, you’ll pay from to per hour for private, one-on-one spanish classes with an instructor certified by the Ministry of Education. Most students remain in class four hours per day, but schools are willing to cater to all schedules.

As is the case with mi profesora, Senorita Ibujes, most teachers speak little or no English. This worried me initially. But after one week of Spanish language immersion, 1 began understanding at an accelerated rate. Since opening its doors in 1989, the Amazonas Ecuador Spanish School averages approximately 500 foreign students per year. Most come from Europe (England, Germany and Holland are prime markets), although Spanish-speaking wannabes pop in regularly from the United States, Canada, and as far away as South Africa, South Korea and the Czech Republic. According to general manager Gustavo Guzman, the average student is about 24 years old. “But we’ve had students as young as 8,” he says. “And as old as 76.”

The school provides three language learning options. The “Super Dynamic” curriculum is recommended for those with only one or two weeks to spare. Classes generally run four to five hours per day. Lessons deal with real-life situations like ordering food at a restaurant or checking into a hotel. Eighty percent of the class involves conversation. The remaining time is devoted to reading, writing, grammar and punctuation.

The “Dynamic” program is best suited for those with three to four weeks in which to study. Again, classes run four to five hours, five days per week. With more days in which to learn, however, students receive a more comprehensive approach Education begins with the Spanish alphabet and moves on to numbers, colors, days of the week, and one of the most important (and sometimes most difficult) aspects of language learning: verb conjugation.

Travelers with a few months on their hands will no doubt benefit from the “Regular” program, which allows for a thoroughly detailed approach to language learning. “We have great success,” says Senior Guzman. “Our students know we are here to help them.” Help is available at all levels, from beginner to advanced. The school prides itself on having taught American Airlines pilots and flight attendants, as well as corporate executives like the general manager of Heineken in Ecuador.

To enhance the language-learning experience, many schools offer a “Home Stay” program. This allows students to live with a carefully screened, middle-class Ecuadorian family in a comfortable environment. The families speak no English. Students are thus provided with the impetus to reinforce Lessons learned in class. Seventy-five percent of students at the Amazonas Ecuador Spanish School, myself included, take advantage of the Home Stay program. I live in the sprawling three-story home of Dr. Jaime Yepez Castro and his wife, Ines Maria Darquea de Yepez. During their six-year affiliation with Amazonas Ecuador Spanish School, the retired couple has hosted 98 students from ah over the world. After I signed their dog-eared guest register, Senora Yepez wrote “99” below my name.

My stay includes three scrumptious home-cooked meals per day, laundry service, a large private bedroom with a color TV, and a private bathroom. At a cost of per day, it’s cheaper and more carefree than living at home. Which brings me to a bilingual revelation. I pay per hour for private Spanish classes that would cost or more in the United States. If you’re serious about learning Spanish, it may be cheaper and far more interesting to fly to Quito, enroll in a Spanish language course and live with an Ecuadorian family.
Check airline prices. Do the math. You might find yourself saying caramba!

Barack wins, the feelings of one black man
by George Cook www.letstalkhonestly.com 11/06/08

On Tuesday November 4, 2008 Barack Obama won the presidential election to become the 44th President of the United States. This was a great day for my family. It so moved me that I haven’t been able to sleep for two days and am still trying to come to grips with the Barack Obama victory.

Everything is like a blur and I am just starting to realize on November 6 that we have a black president. Even now in my slightly delirious state I keep waiting for some reporter on Fox News to start screaming about a voter discrepancy somewhere. Most likely Alaska.

I knew I had to write something but I was just too emotional or exhausted. Probably a combination of both. That and a few celebratory Heinekens.

Election Day was very special for me and besides the 3 hour wait to vote ( which will become six hours as I age and tell the story of how I walked in six inches of snow with no shoes to vote for Obama 30 years from now ) it was a beautiful day.

Early on I drove 3 elderly African American women who were all over 75 years old to the polls. They were acting like little school girls giggling and smiling. I almost said, “Don’t make me pull this car over.”

But it hit me that as happy as I was that I could not really appreciate what they felt. At only forty I have not faced real overt racism. But they had, They lived through Jim Crow and segregation. They saw America’s ugly side.

Their joy was really one of “We have overcome” and I knew they really appreciated and understood what was happening in their lifetime.

That made me think of my daughter who will in her lifetime think it’s normal for a black man to be president and hopefully one day will see a woman attain the highest office in the land. Now when I tell my daughter she can be president I wont be talking out one side of my mouth.

All these thoughts brought a few tears to my eyes. That’s a big deal for me since I can only remember crying three times in my adult life. Those three being when my great grandmother died, when my daughter was born, and when the Giants lost the Super Bowl in 2000.

I want to close by returning to those three old women I drove to the polls. Now everyone who has ever been in an old black persons home knows along with plastic covers on the furniture there are pictures of three people you will always see on the wall.

Jesus Christ, Martin Luther King, and John F. Kennedy.

Now they can add one more…………..

This article is written therefore as a stark reminder that without constant vigilance to perceive and the undaunted courage and determination to stand up to, confront and resolutely face down the mendacious and extremely dangerous actions of tyrants whoever and wherever they are, we will inevitably descend once more into the eviscerating barbarity that imploded in Europe and consumed the rest of the world in its consequences between 1933 and 1945.

If it’s plausible to speculate on the actual existence of the apparently mythical polytheistic god, by postulating that there were not really supernatural gods but flesh-and-blood ‘gods’ – technologically advanced extraterrestrials in other words – then it open up a can of worms. Commercials can be so funny and enjoyable like any TV show, but shorter in length, fact that is known by people who like to enjoy UTube videos funny clips that also include UTube banned commercials. How can a commercial be banned? There is a very old concept that still applies nowadays: censure. Dictionary defines censure as an expression of strong disapproval or harsh criticism, but when it comes to commercials, there are several factors that might propitiate their banning.

In the United States censure is a public reprimanding that, someone receives for inappropriate behavior. Applied to radio and TV, a commercial can be censored when it has inappropriate content. This decision is made at the sole discretion of the staff in charge of a station management, but sometimes can be influenced by a public request or by an official or federal entity asking to take it down or modify it.

Same principle applies in almost all the countries around the world regardless the nature of the content, meaning that what at simply sight looks like an innocent Burger King commercial can be banned for sexually explicit content, like occurred in Germany when commercial promoting burgers with naked vegetables simulating humans was aired.

When it comes to banned commercials, both UTube funniest videos and UTube clumsy clips are good source to find banned commercials online. Furthermore, point your browser directly to UtubeVideoClip to see some of best commercial videos online.

Where does censure limit start? This is a good question for all of us. What may look simple an innocent to our eyes, could result offensive to others., although some broadcasting stations consider many other factors before banning a commercial including potential trademarks or copyright infringement, sexual explicit or sexual oriented content in family air time, politic context that might link the broadcaster with the advertiser’s message, and as many other reasons as the broadcasting station consider, otherwise upon an authority request.

Among the most banned commercials with sexual context that some companies have aired we can cite, those of GoDaddy, Levis, Microsoft, Heineken and other beers, and those commercials advertising condoms. Other commercials have been banned for their “bad taste” or anti-social behavior and a long list of etceteras besides these.

Do you have a banned commercial that you would like to share? Visit www.utubevideoclip.com and upload it. Membership is free and you receive free video storage space, a feature that not is not available at most hosting services either free or paid. In addition, you will meet other members who collect and upload those banned commercials that you saw once, and those that you have never seen before.

It is amazing discover how those banned commercials sometimes were recorded by accident, while someone like to record commercials either by hobby or as a part of their studies in disciplines associated to creativity, advertising, marketing, etc… Does not really matter why banned commercials were captured by someone’s video recorder, the great thing about UTube clips is that anyone can discover why those commercials were censored.

]]>

The UK is facing some of the most challenging economic conditions for many years. Profit warnings are coming thick and fast, and the sense of gloom is deepening with every new announcement about rationalizations and redundancies. But every challenge
represents an opportunity, and those companies busily cutting their marketing and training budgets and putting freezes on salaries and recruitment could be doing completely the wrong thing.

Jackie Orme, Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, likens companies’ current conundrum to a sort of ‘glass half-full or half-empty’ dilemma. So while the job of a leader gets harder in a downturn, “maybe the potential for it to be even more rewarding just got greater,” she points out.

What is incontrovertible, however, is that while all organisations go through tough times, the test of their leadership mettle is how they respond. So although “knowing how and when to batten down the hatches is undoubtedly an important leadership skill,” says Orme, “it won’t support growth, nor an advantaged position, for the longer term.” As such, she concludes: “Riding out to meet the storm takes courage.”

It may take courage, but there is no alternative, says Steve Frobisher, a Member of PA’s Management Group. “Over the past 15 years or so companies have had it relatively easy,” he says. “But globalisation, climate change and the war for talent are examples of
challenges that are rapidly intensifying, and a downturn just accelerates further an already accelerating pace of change.” He continues: “You can get away with ‘me-too’ approaches in an upturn, but not in a downturn. Doing more of the same won’t give you the answer, because that’s what everyone else is doing and you get into a vicious cycle that leads
nowhere different. You are actually likely to need a completely new business model– and even in a downturn you get whole new types of customer demand.”

So a downturn should be a catalyst for a step change, he concludes. “Treat it as an opportunity to sharpen your thinking about where you want to be in the future and how you’re going to get there.”

The last recession, in 2000 to 2001, is within most people’s working memories,
and some of the lessons to emerge from that are salutary. Indeed, some of them were encapsulated in an article entitled ‘Preparing for the next downturn’ in the pring 2007 issue of the McKinsey Quarterly.

Authors Richard Dobbs and Tomas Karakolev, partners, respectively, in McKinsey’s London and Prague offices, along with Rishi Raj, a consultant in the Delhi office, found that while many companies were unprepared for the last recession, those that were prepared emerged stronger from the recession than they were when they went into it.

According to their research 40% of the US’s leading industrial companies toppled from the first quartile in their sectors during the 2000-2001 recession, with one-third of leading US banks suffering the same fate. However, 15% of companies that had not been industry leaders before the recession vaulted into leadership positions during it. The post-recession leaders shared some common characteristics. Entering the downturn they typically maintained lower debt on their balance sheets, controlled operating costs well and diversified their product offerings and geographical spread. This gave them a high degree of strategic flexibility which
came into its own during the recession. “We believe that flexibility can make a notable difference by allowing managers to take advantage of the opportunities that … recession might provide,” write the authors.

Many of the post-recession leaders expanded their businesses during the recession, both organically and
through activities such as mergers and acquisitions (M & A), alliances and joint ventures. But pre-recession they had focused more on organic growth than M & A, giving them the flexibility to be able to buy cheap assets from distress sellers and pay their suppliers faster – possibly in exchange for lower prices and better service.

The more successful companies also focused on reducing costs without damaging the long-term health of the business. They were able to cut selling, general and administration costs – which are notoriously difficult to cut in the short term – by making their overhead costs and operations more flexible before the recession. This allowed them to redeploy their funds, assets and personnel as conditions changed.

The less successful companies cut their research and development and advertising more deeply, which compromised their ability to exploit opportunities that this expenditure might create. What’s more, before the recession their productivity per employee was lower than that of the leaders, so they had to lay off more employees during the downturn – something that may well have damaged their ability to attract and retain talent in the future.

But, notwithstanding the help that strong advertising and marketing can provide in a downturn, companies must ensure that they sustain a relentless focus on their customers during the downturn and not be seduced into what Jean-Claude Larréché, Alfred H Heineken Professor of Marketing at INSEAD, calls ‘compensation strategies’.

Compensation strategies, as Larréché explains in his recent book The Momentum Effect, are strategies – not least marketing strategies – that attempt to compensate for a poor product, service or customer proposition. Companies – especially the larger ones – waste lots of time, money, effort and people on such strategies, which are a proxy for the kind of ‘origination strategies’ that create real momentum growth, he argues.

Origination strategies create breakthrough products and services like the iPod or First Direct which, “because they change people’s lives, virtually sell themselves,” continues Larréché.
But such ‘power offers’ are less the result of marketing and sales, or even “the kind of linear R & D activities that most big organisations do,” but rather “spending more money and time upstream on the kind of teambased exploration and discovery that characterises the best entrepreneurial organisations. Taking people out of their normal environments for a couple of days at a time is very empowering and has an amazing effect on their ability to think creatively,” he says. It’s a judgement that AG Lafley, CEO of Procter & Gamble (P & G), would no doubt agree with. When he took on the role in 2000, there were, he admitted recently, “too many managers on their mobile phones, or buried in spreadsheets – in essence ‘showing the customers their behind’.” It was a culture he quickly set about changing. The customer is now at the centre of P & G’s innovation activity, and Lafley expects his business units to have between 10-30% of their innovation portfolio focused on disruptive innovation. The downturn is unlikely to change that. “Companies need to take the long view,” he concludes.

The rankings of these golfers are determined by the ranking points they have obtained through tournaments such as the PGA Tour, European Tour and the World Golf Championships. This article explores the top 10 male golfers in 2008, and see how they bring the game to a whole new level.

#1: Tiger Woods. If you have not heard of him, you are probably from the planet Mars. Born in 1975, December 30, he is one of the highest-paid professional athlete around, with an estimated worth of 0 million. To date, he has won 14 major golf championships and is also the youngest player to win 50 tournaments on tour. Woods is married to Elin Nordegren, a Swedish model and they are
expecting their second child.

#2: Sergio García. He is a Spanish professional golfer and reached his current ranking after winning the HSBC Champions tournament in November 2008. His father taught him how to play golf at the tender age of 3. Sergio turned professional in 1999 and came under the spotlight when he fought Tiger in the 1999 PGA Championship and finished second. Look out for this guy.

#3: Philip Alfred Mickelson. For many years Mickelson was often described as the “best golfer never to win a major.” Born in San Diego, he won his first PGA Tour tournament in 1991. He is the second-highest paid athlete in the world, behind Tiger Woods. He earned million and million in 2006 and 2007 respectively. In 1990, he became the first left-hander to win the U.S. Amateur title.

#4: Pádraig Harrington. After a successful amateur career, including winning the Walker Cup with the Great Britain & Ireland team in 1995, Harrington turned professional later that year, joining the European Tour in 1996. Married with 2 sons, Harrington is currently the number one player in Europe.

#5: Vijay Singh. He turned professional in 1982 and won the Malaysian PGA Championship in 1984. He has won three major championships (The Masters in 2000 and the PGA Championship in 1998 and 2004) and was the leading PGA Tour money winner in 2003 and 2004. In 2003, he netted a total of .5 million in winnings, beating Tiger Woods by almost a million dollars. Vijay is married to Ardena Seth and they have a son.

#6: Robert Karlsson. He was born in Katrineholm, Sweden. He turned professional in 1989. What began as a humble start had him darting to the top. Karlsson’s second victory of 2006 at the Deutsche Bank Players Championship of Europe in July helped him reach the top 50 of the Official World Golf Rankings and in 2008 he entered the top 25. His win at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship took him to number 8 in October 2008.

#7: Camilo Villegas. He began playing on the PGA Tour in 2004 and earned his PGA Tour card just prior to the 2006 season. Camilo won his first PGA Tour title in September 2008, winning the BMW Championship by two shots over Dudley Hart. He then beat Sergio García in a playoff in The Tour Championship which took him to his current ranking.

#8: Henrik Stenson. Henrik turned professional in 1999 and the following year topped the money rankings on the second tier golf tour in Europe, the Challenge Tour. In February 2007, he reached number eight in the rankings following his victory at the Dubai Desert Classic and became the highest ranked European golfer for the first time. He is married to Emma Lofgren and they have a daughter.

#9: Ernie Els. He was a former world number 1 and has been one of the top professional players in the world since the mid-1990s. His best year is probably 2002 where he won the Heineken Classic at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club. Then outplayed World Number one Tiger Woods to lift the Genuity Championship title. Els overcame a four man playoff to take home the famed Claret Jug for the first time. He also took home his fourth World Match Play title, along with his third Nedbank Challenge in the last four years dominating a world class field winning by 8 shots. Ernie Els holds the record for most weeks in the World Top 10, with 756.

#10: Lee John Westwood. He won his first professional tournament, the Volvo Scandinavian Masters in 1996, then closely followed by the Sumitomo VISA Taiheiyo Masters in Japan. He is one of the few golfers who has won tournaments on every continent. His best ranking stood at number 4. Married to Laurae Coltart, they have 2 children.

]]>

Singapore has Tiger beer, Laos has Beer Lao and Australia has Castlemaine XXXX. Dedicated beer drinkers often arrive in Phuket and aren’t quite sure which tipple to sample. Phuket has a range of beers on offer, including a couple that are locally brewed.

Beer Chang remains one of the most popular beers for foreigners visiting Phuket. You can generally rate a beer’s popularity by the number of tourists wearing T-shirts and vests emblazoned with the brew’s logo. The Beer Chang logo is more seen in Phuket than Ralph Lauren or Calvin Klein. Beer Chang is an average beer that, when consumed in large quantities, can lead to strange dreams and horrendous hangovers.

A less fierce beer is Singha, which is usually a little more expensive than Chang. Singha is the preferred beer of many expats living in Phuket. It has a good, full taste without the brain-wrenching aftereffects of Chang.

For something a bit softer, Leo has a similar taste to Budweiser, although you won’t find Leo in most discos and nightclubs. It can, however, be bought in all 7-Elevens and some beer bars. It tastes pleasant and goes down well with a spicy meal.

If you’re looking to save money on your beer purchases, you might want to try the cheapest of the lot: Archa Beer. Look for the blue cans in 7-Eleven. Archa Beer is almost never sold in bars, pubs or clubs. Even the local taxi drivers don’t appear too keen to drink it. It is certainly an acquired taste and it leaves a heavy feeling in one’s stomach, but there are people in Phuket and the rest of Thailand who swear by this beer.

To get into the holiday spirit, nothing beats a can of Phuket Beer. Not only is the can interesting to look at, but the beer is light and fresh and it’s easy to drink a can or two without thinking about it. Phuket Beer is, however, not commonly sold around the island, although you can find it at some expat restaurants and bars.

The recently opened Phuket Brewery on Chalermprakeat R.9 Rd in Kathu actually brews its own beer: Pearl Beer. Phuket Brewery is a huge place where people can eat and drink, and the home brew alone makes it worth a visit.

Then, of course, you have Heineken, Bud, Corona, Carlsberg, Guinness and a bunch of other imports. They are usually more expensive than the aforementioned beers, but it all comes down to preference.

Good luck, beer lovers.

Nonstop Riot Closes Series B Funding From North Venture Partners

Edit Article |

]]>

NonStop Riot (http://nonstopriot.com), a US music branding agency, has secured an undisclosed round of Series B financing from Oakland, CA-based North Venture Partners. The Los Angeles-based firm has worked with a growing list of brand partners including: Ray-Ban, SanDisk, Loopt, slotMusic, and Red Bull among others. The funding will ensure NonStop Riot’s continued ability to propel brands and artists to the mainstream.

NonStop Riot CEO Josh Crick comments, “This round of funding speaks to our success over the last three years, and North’s support of our growth and strategic leadership in the music branding space. We’re excited to have North on our team because of their deep knowledge of music and marketing, their industry connections, and their track record of transparency with entrepreneurs. It’s a partnership in the truest sense.”

As marketers’ love affair with music continues to grow, NonStop Riot has answered their call with brand building strategies and promotional campaigns that balance tangible metrics with social relevance; no small feat in a segment often plagued with me-too tactics that can only measured by “cool”. The mutually beneficial relationship between brands and bands provides a new revenue stream for labels, a valuable set of exposure opportunities for artists, and positions the brand as socially-relevant in the consumer’s eyes.

“As more and more lifestyle brands shift away from traditional high cost, above-the-line marketing tactics, they are looking for innovative and cost-effective ways to reach and inspire their target. NonStop Riot has ‘cracked the code’ on how to authentically bring together brands with emerging bands to create a memorable consumer experience,” explains Alex Bernstein, Managing Partner, North Venture Partners.

NonStop Riot has also launched a website, FeedingYouMusic.com, that aggregates new music from 2,000+ sites hourly providing a front row seat to monitor the bands that are on the cusp of breaking into the mainstream. Bands first tapped by NonStop Riot have gone on to be featured by brands from Apple to Heineken, landed their own series on MTV, and provide the nightly soundtrack for the most popular shows on television.

About NonStop Riot
NonStop Riot is the U.S. music branding agency that brings brands, bands, and consumers together through the strategic use of music. Its team has built and managed music strategies for some of the most influential consumer brands in the US and globally, and they continue to educate the industry at large through music marketing research. www.musicmakesitbetter.com

About North Venture Partners
North is a boutique private equity advisory and consulting firm focused on accelerating the growth of innovative early stage ventures. The Best Type of Beer to Drink in Phuket
