Amsterdam History, Culture and Museums

]]>

Amsterdam is regarded by many as the city with the most intricate and efficient navigable waterways in the world. It was once the financial hub for all of Europe but today is known more for its ‘tolerant’ character with regards to activities such as prostitution and cannabis.

It has over 50 museums satisfying the hunger of many tourism tastes including that of art, architecture, diamonds, Jewish history, war history and beer. There are even museums displaying the history of sex, erotica, hash and torture. The museums vary in size from the grandiose of the Rijksmuseum to the fascinating Amstelkring, also known as Out Lord in the Attic, in the Red Light district.

Despite its rich and turbulent art, religious and trade history, the city had a modest beginning early in the 13th century as a fishing village and by the middle of the 13th century construction of ‘ Aemestelledam , medieval Dutch for ‘Dam in the Amstel, commenced. The first canals were then built for defence and water management but the ease of transporting traded goods between ships from all over the world contributed to the expansion of the 17th century.

By 1660, the city had quadrupled in size with 3 main canals. Both sides of the canals were lined with houses of wealthy merchants reaping the benefits of having their goods delivered to their doorstep on the water.

Although, in the early 20th century, many canals were filled in to allow for the building of more roads, a quarter of the city’s area still consists of waterways with up to 65 miles of ancient canals. There are now 5 main concentric semi-circles of canals or ‘grachts’ called Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht, Prinsengracht and Singelgracht.

Today the original dam is known as the famous Dam Square. Damrak, the main road leading into Dam Square was once the end of the Amstel River. It remains in the heart of the city and although not everyone’s image of beauty, is flanked by the Royal Palace and remembered as the meeting point for Napoleon and his troops during the 1808 takeover of the city.

An array of transport modes are available to get around the sites of Amsterdam including buses, trams, the subway, taxis, cars and even bikes. However, for door to door services like the ancient residents, the public transport operators Museumboat and the Canal Bus, stop at almost all of Amsterdam’s museums and attractions via the web of canals. Some of these main attractions include Anne Frank’s house, Madame Tussaud, Rembrandt’s house, Stedelijk Museum, Van Gogh’s Museum, Heineken Brewery Museum, Diamond Factory Tours and the Jewish Historical Museum.

As Amsterdam was built to be appreciated from the water, there are endless types of canal cruises on offer. The historical luxury Saloon boat cruises are appealingly restored from their original early 20th century creations. They were once sailed by professionals to entertain their clients and guests.

Cruises from the various fleets can be taken at virtually any meal time including breakfast, lunch, high tea and even cheese, wine or beer tasting. Dinner time cruises offer the choice of cuisine including Thai, French, Indonesian, barbeque, pizza, sushi and even pancakes.

Other themed cruises cater for lovers of music, cocktails and drinks, theatre, romance, children’s parties, antique ferryboats, literature and of course the famous red light district.

The central part of the city revolving around Dam Square is divided by Damrak into the old part (Oude Zijdse) on the east side and the new part (Nieuwe Zijdse) on the west side. The Oude Zijdse was once a hive of activity during the middle ages and Amsterdam’s Golden Age of the 17th century. Boats would sail up to Nieuwe Markt to have goods weighed at the Waag before being traded. Attractions of the Oude Zijdse include the gothic Oude kerk which is the oldest church in Amsterdam dating back to the 13th century. Passers by often hear the exquisitely toned 1724 organ in the summer months through the beautiful stain glass windows.

The major modern museums are found in the Nieuwe Zijdse as is the pedestrians-only shopping street, Nieuwedijk.

Coffee shops and cafes are found all over the city. Generally speaking, cafes serve only standard non-alcoholic beverages and food. Coffee shops present more liberal menus for their customers to meet their various consumption desires.

Apart from the smorgasbord of restaurants, coffee shops, cafes and museums many squares (pleins) and parks provide visitors with down time after busy days. Relax in Vondelpark near Leidesplein, which is also the main nightlife area, or just past Waterloo plein is the Hortus Botanicus and Artis ( one of the oldest zoos in the world ) Leidesplein, Leidesestraat, Rembrandtplein, Muntplein and Museumplein all are lined with various boutique, family, budget and modern hotels. The luxurious Hotel Krasnapolski and Amstel Hotel both date back to the 19th century.

Amsterdam has something for everyone to do including children and on any budget. Its relaxed atmosphere and modern approach to life is welcoming yet allows for escapism back in time for a valuable historical education.

Amsterdam – a city sometimes called the Venice of the north – is a city surrounded by water. Holland is a small country located between Germany and England across the sea. Whether it be along the North Sea or one of the many canals and rivers throughout the city, finding a place to stay with a waterfront view is an easy task. This modernized city with an old world charm offers a variety of places for visitors to stay from the finest international chain hotels to an intimate inn and even a houseboat. For a relatively small city Amsterdam contains nearly 300 hotels and that does not include the 100 plus guesthouses, the hostels, cottages, houseboats, and even some apartments for extended stays. But even with all of these available hotel rooms and other places to stay, finding lodgings during the tourist season can be very difficult. As a result, it is recommended for tourists to book a room or other lodging in advance. By booking ahead guests will be ensured that not only will they get the room that they want but at a price they desire as well. There are websites that list these hotels and similar accommodations in the city by category – large, number of stars, small, etc.

Here are a few of Amsterdam’s most popular attractions and sightseeing activities listed to make your travel experience the best possible.

Museums

Some 50 of the over 400 museums in The Netherlands are located within the city of Amsterdam and are among the city’s most popular tourist attractions. Besides the typical works of the masters, modern art, film, and photography; some of the museums that can be found in Amsterdam are the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, a Botanical Museum, a museum dedicated to the Dutch resistance during World War II, the Heineken Experience, the Ajax Museum (Dutch football team), a houseboat museum, a torture museum, museums dedicated to sex and erotica, NEMO a hands on science museum for the children that is housed in a boat shaped building, the shipping museum, a Biblical Museum, the tropical museum and the Jewish museum. There are also several art galleries within the city.

The largest of the museums is the Rijksmuseum, which houses Dutch art dating as far back as some early religious works, and of course; the masters.

Located in the middle of the city is the Anne Frank House, where the young teen wrote her diary while hiding from the Nazi’s with her family. The original diary is on display at the house.

The Houseboat Museum is an actual houseboat similar to those used by some residents of Amsterdam. The boat is set up as if the family where merely out running errands or at the cinema and will return at any moment.

Across from the Anne Frank House is the tulip museum. The small museum offers a multimedia presentation of the famous flower including its history.

The Dam square

The Dam square is known for its historical value and is often an important part of many Amsterdam tours. The beauty and the historical background of this Dam make it a part of every tourist’s visit, when touring Amsterdam. The various fascinating things about the Dam are also documented in the historical museum of Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Canal Cruise

Holiday in Amsterdam can never be complete without the Amsterdam Canal Cruise, through its magnificent and incredible canals. Cruising through canals is the best way to cherish Amsterdam tour, as you get to see marvelous 17th century houses and mansions, as well as startling architecture.

However, Night life in Amsterdam is something different and it gives the true sense of amusement. The whole city at night lights up with colorful sparkling lights which creates nothing but a spell of romantic atmosphere which invites its visitors warmly.

Summer may be the time when most of the tourists come to visit but The Netherlands offers something for residents and visitors any time of the year.

5 Stars Hotel – Security And Comfort For Your Family

It’s usually great fun to take a vacation with family. Choosing the right destination is essential however, if the same importance is not used while picking the accommodation you choose to stay in, it may turn out to be a holiday spoiler. You would not wish to make your family lodge at a place where following a lengthy day’s enjoyment they’d be unable to get a great night’s slumber therefore spoiling the remainder of the vacation time.

Top five festivals in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is well known for its liberal views, stunning architecture and a complex maze of side streets and canals. Festival time in the city is a particularly fun time and visitors can enjoy a wide range of parties and carnivals throughout the year.

Festival no.1 – The Queensday Festival

Although this festival takes place the length and breadth of the country one of the best places to celebrate Queensday is in Amsterdam!

When does it happen?
This is an annual festival that takes place every year on April the 30th.

What’s it all about?
The festival is in honour of the Queen Mother’s birthday and is a national celebration that translates into a great reason to party hard and long!

What can I expect?
Amsterdam hosts the largest open-air Queensday celebrations and around 750,000 people descend on the city. Amsterdam hotels during this period are overbooked and hugely busy and many choose to arrive via train. Crowds will be dressed in bright orange clothes and second hand stalls, food, drink, pageants, music and dancing is to be expected.

Festival no.2 – The Grachten Festival
A yearly festival that takes place every summer and with numerous classical concerts.

When does it happen?
Every year in August and it lasts for five consecutive days.

What’s it all about?
More than 80 classical concerts will be played out to large crowds of people and even those who are not interested in the music will appreciate the spectacular sounds and settings.

What can I expect?
The concerts will be played out in the centre of Amsterdam in different locations such as houses, concert halls, old buildings, museums and local gardens and thousands of people gather in crowds to watch the spectacular lighting and sound event.

Festival no.3 – Gay Pride
Many big cities enjoy a Gay Pride Festival but fewer do it better, noisier or bigger than Amsterdam.

When does it happen?
From the 5th-8th of August every year.

What’s it all about?
An extensive celebration that consists of parades, pageants, parties, food, drink, music, dancing; you name it, they do it!

What can I expect?
The celebrations are somewhat carnivalesque with many parades including naughty and sexual ones gracing the city streets. Much of the celebrations are held along the canal streets and if you enjoy a colourful party then this is a great festival for all to enjoy.

Festival no.4 – The 5 Day Off Amsterdam!
A loud music event in various venues across Amsterdam.

When does it happen?
Dates vary but it always happens during the month of April.

What’s it all about?
The festival is for music enthusiasts who enjoy it loud and busy! Techno, electronic, dance and rave music can be heard for miles around and bands from all over Europe strive to take part.

What can I expect?
The Heineken Music Hall, Melkweg and Paradiso are commonly used venues and you can expect to see lots of people drinking and dancing way in to the night. If you wish to get an Amsterdam hotel during this festival you should pre-book as many visit from Europe to attend.

Festival no.5 – The Holland Festival
The Holland Festival is a popular performing arts festival that is the biggest of its kind in the whole country.

When does it happen?
It takes place over the period of three weeks, starting on June the 1st and finishing on June the 23rd although dates may vary every year.

What’s it all about?
This festival brings together a range if performances in the arts from dance shows and art galleries through to operas and theatre presentations.

What can I expect?
The Holland Festival attracts people from all over Europe and visitors can expect to meet a wide range of people to celebrate the arts and cultural scene in the city.

All about Holiday Inn Amsterdam

Edit Article |

]]>

Sited just a few minute’s walk from Amsterdam’s busy RAI station, close to Schiphol Airport and the metro, we at Holiday Inn Amsterdam have all the facilities that 21st century business meetings need, having recently undergone full refurbishment and modernisation.

Located in a quiet and leafy suburb overlooking the gardens and attractions of Amstelpark, we at Holiday Inn Amsterdam are conveniently near the RAI congress and exhibition centre, in the city’s financial district. At the same time, the metro can whisk you in minutes to the charming cobbled streets, museums and mediaeval buildings of old Amsterdam. Close to the coast and River Amstel (from which Amsterdam derived its name), our conference facilities are equally suited to corporate hospitality events and company outings.

When people book meetings in Amsterdam, they want to enjoy the experience. It’s essential that wireless internet is freely available, that the food in the restaurant is appetising and delicious, and that the conference rooms are comfortable to work in. Our facilities at Holiday Inn Amsterdam include 13 air-conditioned rooms housing from 10 to 350 delegates, Wi-Fi access in the restaurant (ideal for planning last-minute strategies over a leisurely breakfast) and spacious executive rooms on the 14th floor. Here, you can relax and unwind with a newspaper, while enjoying extensive views of the city – or alternatively let off steam in the air-conditioned fitness centre.

Many people find they concentrate better at business meetings if they take time out from the conference table occasionally. Amsterdam is a beautiful city to explore – and for once, you can leave the car at home. Take a trip on the canal or river, or hire a bike from reception and explore the surrounding countryside. There are museums and art galleries to visit, and numerous music events – the city is as well known for its cultural calendar as it is for its Old Masters.

Our facilities at Holiday Inn make us ideal for corporate hospitality purposes. As well as the hotel itself, there are several interesting venues nearby that can be utilised. Ideas for corporate tours include the nearby Heineken Brewery; the Anne Frank House and Museum; the Van Gogh museum and the Gothic-Renaissance Rijksmuseum, where Rembrandt’s striking self-portraits are on display. Other options include a trip to the flower markets and tulip fields; a tour of the Gassan Diamond factory, a musical evening at the Concertgebouw or tickets to the Amsterdam Arena. For something completely different, Amsterdam’s infamous Red Light District is just 5 km away. Our concierge service will help you plan your itinerary, and can even book tickets for events.

We at Holiday Inn Amsterdam have a first-class cosmopolitan restaurant to supplement our extensive conference facilities. However, you could also try one of the converted ship restaurants in the trendy Eastern Docklands sector. In the city centre you will find bars, nightclubs, casinos and an eclectic range of shopping experiences. However, if you just want a break from the conference for half an hour, you can do worse than explore the breathtaking botanical gardens of nearby Amstelpark.

Amsterdam is one of the supreme diminutive cities in the world. Beginning from canals to world-famous museums and historical sights, Amsterdam is one of the most romantic and stunning cities in Europe.

Amsterdam is also a conurbation of tolerance and diversity. It has all the advantages of a big city: culture, nightlife, international restaurants, and good transport. In Amsterdam your objective is never far away, but gets a bike for most genuine understanding.

Museums are the major vacationer draw in Amsterdam. Everybody knows the famous Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum. Alongside the prosperity of grandiose Golden Age paintings, you’ll find exhilarating modern art, press, film, theatre and photography museums and a number of exclusive Dutch treats like the Heineken Experience, the Ajax Museum and the Houseboat museum.  A welcoming, diminutive museum about the tulip – flower which is an insignia of the Netherlands, Amsterdam Tulip Museum is situated just athwart the bridge from the Anne Frank House. You may perhaps see there attention-grabbing multimedia presentations about the history of tulip. Amsterdam has more than fifty museums which catch the attention of millions of visitors each year.

The Amsterdam hotels segment provides the visitors with simplified information on hotels in Amsterdam, and offers the prospect of instantaneous reservation – free of charge, with no advance expenses. Amsterdam is an eventful place during weekends, particularly in the high season. It is hence suggested that you book your hotel in Amsterdam in advance.

The most popular luxury hotels for going to places of interest are situated around Dam square, the amusement seekers might prefer Red Light District, or vivid squares of Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein. Families with kids and museum seekers may like better hotels around Vondelpark. Amsterdam has a number of the landmarks hotels, which stand out beyond the hundreds of hotels in town. The old and decorous historic hotels as Hotel Krasnapolsky and Amstel Hotel, and the contemporary, intercontinental hotels as Amsterdam Hilton and Okura Amsterdam, along with a number of other outstanding, five-star hotels. Amsterdam offers the whole world of opportunities for a visitor on a low budget, giving you more privacy and peace.

Geographic location of Amsterdam and its acquaintances with its neighbor countries Germany, Belgium and Luxemburg, strong links with United Kingdom, Scandinavia and France make Amsterdam an imperative business centre. There are several business hotels in Amsterdam area specializing in serving the business travelers. The unsurpassed of them as Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel or Amsterdam Hilton are also the pinnacle city hotels but the selection is much wider with a number of budget hotels accomplished of organizing business meeting or even big conferences.

Simply put, Amsterdam is one of the jewels of Europe, given the beautiful and varied attractions, loads of things to do and explore, and the whole cosmopolitan charm to it. Although a bustling metropolis, the Dutch capital has retained its relationship with the old world through historical buildings, monuments and other important sites of yore. With so many of them plying on a regular basis, you ought not to miss a cheap flight to Amsterdam . Laden with sightseeing attractions, striking vistas and panoramic views, not for nothing is the place frequented by more than a thousand tourists every year. With so much to be seen and done, you’d rather come here for the long haul. Starting with the cultural scene, Amsterdam boasts more museums than any other city in Europe. Have a dekko at the largest collection of Vincent van Gogh’s paintings in the world at the Van Gogh Museum, see celebrated works of art at the State Hermitage Museum, and take a journey between the fantastical and the real in NEMO Amsterdam, the variety just refuses to finish. How about a visit to where the Amsterdam’s heart beats? Built in the Dutch renaissance style, spend a few hours watching and feeding the pigeons at the magnificent Dam Square, visit the Royal Palace nearby, and complete your trip to this historic place with a view of the narrowest house in the world. You could also seek some relaxation in Amsterdam’s green jewel the “Hortus” or thrill yourself with a visit to the Heineken Experience. Tantalizing your taste buds and inspiring the gourmet in you, the restaurants of Amsterdam have a way of exciting the eager beaver. And, it’s not just the upscale restaurants, the local eating joints spread all over the city come up with quite a scrumptious fare day in and day out. After seeking the various culinary delights, one can look forward to some after-the-sunset merry and mirth. Glitzy discothèques, lively cafes, jazzy pubs and bars, exotic lounges and more, welcome to the world of nighttime revelry. Enjoy interesting conversations with the locals, sip on a nice cappuccino, drink a few beers and dance from dusk till dawn to some groovy numbers, there are plenty ways of keeping yourself up and about throughout the night.

Amsterdam’s events calendar inspires one to do more and more. Celebrations, fairs, festivals, music and dance shows, opera performances, theater nights, there are opportunities one too many here. The canal city caters to all kinds of tourists, be it a backpacker or one on a luxurious vacation. So, you find plenty of lavish lodgings and indulgent ways to enjoy coexisting with cheap hotel accommodations and free-for-all amusements. Last but definitely not the least in any way, shopping in Amsterdam can turn out to be quite an experience, given all the markets, malls and alleys dedicated to retail therapy. Buy souvenirs, home furnishings, gourmet food and what not at Albert Cuyp Market, pick up a designer dress from one of the boutiques at the Magna Plaza Shopping Center, or just stroll around the vast shopping area that goes by the name of Nine Alleys.

How To Choose Great Picnic Blankets

You might think that there’s no reason to get a blanket specifically to use on picnics— that choosing any old blanket from around your home to sit on while dining al fresco would work just fine. Unfortunately, the kinds of blankets you keep around the house probably aren’t equipped to deal with pointy rocks, damp grass, dirt or leaves. If you’re looking for great picnic blankets, it’s important to know what features to look for in order to have the best, most fun picnic experience possible.

Amsterdam is a vibrant and fun city, perfect for a holiday or even a short break to get rid of some of your stress and let you have a really fun time. There is something for everyone in Amsterdam, and it is easy to get to with its international airport being only 15 kilometres away from the city and there is a direct train which takes you right into the city centre from the airport, so it couldn’t be easier to get to your Amsterdam hotel ready for your city break or vacation. Once there, you may be ready to sample Amsterdam’s diverse and unique culture. You could try one of the city’s celebrated brown cafes, rather like a British pub with the beautiful brown panelling which gives them the name, providing their unique ambience where you can sit and enjoy a beer by candlelight. The traditional beer is Heineken of course, but the white beers are gaining in popularity and provide something different. For somewhere livelier the nightlife in Amsterdam is justifiably famous for being energetic and varied. The two best known nightlife areas are the Leidseplein and the Rembrandtplein and both of these have lots of bars and clubs such as the Sugar Factory and the Power Zone which are easily reached from your Amsterdam hotel. For a meal there are many and varied places to eat, from expensive high budget restaurants to reasonably priced meals at supermarket chains, these are all available. Indonesian restaurants are common, and are good value for money. Many of these can be found in the area of Amsterdam colloquially known as Chinatown, and are usually of excellent quality. You can also find Chinese, Japanese and Thai cuisine in this area – a culinary delight. Here you can find falafel bars where you will be given all the salad you can eat with your meal, making them superb value. Also worth tasting, if you do not want to eat at your Amsterdam hotel, is Surinamese food, which is a unique tasting food which is a blend of many cultures, as befits this cosmopolitan European city. During the day, after breakfasting at your Amsterdam hotel, there is lots to do in this beautiful city. Why not take a relaxing cruise down the canal to see the sights from the water? You can have a guided tour or just cruise by yourself. You can even hire a gondola! Or if you prefer to stay on land to see the sights, there is no better way to travel round Amsterdam than by bicycle. The City centre is very flat; cars are discouraged, so it is safe and easy to get around on a bike to see the museums, for example, such as some fine examples of Rembrandt’s art.

Luxury cottages Lake district

As my husband’s business is not doing very well of late, we have decided to economise on our family holiday this year. Instead of going to mainland Europe as we usually do, we have decided to spend our main summer break in the Lake District this year instead and rent a holiday cottage.

Short Trip To Amsterdam

Looking for a short European weekend holiday? Amsterdam could be just the place to enjoy with your family, or friends or partner. Amsterdam short breaks combine culture, food, and fun in one beautiful, quaint city to bring forth an experience unlike any other.

Amsterdam is a city of less than one million residents but has over 50 theatres and movie houses, two ballet troupes, a symphony orchestra, and numerous museums.

The Leidesplein is the theatre district of Amsterdam. Many of the numerous theater cinemas are themed in that each carries a certain type of film – art house, film noir, English only, new, etc. The Dutch run the film in it’s original language with the sub-titles in Dutch dialogue; as a result, visitors can often find a film in their native tongue; especially English.

Must see places in Amsterdam include architectural specimens like the Old Church of Wallen’s, or Wallen’s Oude Kerk, the het Houten Huys at the Begijnhof built in rare Gothic style, and the Royal Palace which is a fine specimen of Baroque architecture.

Highly recommended museums include the Stedelijk Museum and Van Gogh Museum of modern art and the Rijksmuseum with its vast collection of Rembrandt paintings and classical Dutch art. The Heineken Music Hall and symphony orchestra at the Concertgebouw are Amsterdam’s cultural venues.

If you are party lover, then the Amsterdam is the perfect place. There are bountiful discos, cafes, bars, restaurants and clubs that you cannot feel bore in this charming city. Amsterdam nightlife offers something for everyone whether you are group of friends or couple on Honeymoon. De Still, Spuistraat 326, De Wildman Nieuwezijds and Kolk 3 are some of the famous bars in this beautiful city. If you are lover of the music, then this city is perfect place as it organizes lots of musical shows.
