The Best Type of Beer to Drink in Phuket

Singapore has Tiger beer, Laos has Beer Lao and Australia has Castlemaine XXXX. Dedicated beer drinkers often arrive in Phuket and aren’t quite sure which tipple to sample. Phuket has a range of beers on offer, including a couple that are locally brewed.

Beer Chang remains one of the most popular beers for foreigners visiting Phuket. You can generally rate a beer’s popularity by the number of tourists wearing T-shirts and vests emblazoned with the brew’s logo. The Beer Chang logo is more seen in Phuket than Ralph Lauren or Calvin Klein. Beer Chang is an average beer that, when consumed in large quantities, can lead to strange dreams and horrendous hangovers.

A less fierce beer is Singha, which is usually a little more expensive than Chang. Singha is the preferred beer of many expats living in Phuket. It has a good, full taste without the brain-wrenching aftereffects of Chang.

For something a bit softer, Leo has a similar taste to Budweiser, although you won’t find Leo in most discos and nightclubs. It can, however, be bought in all 7-Elevens and some beer bars. It tastes pleasant and goes down well with a spicy meal.

If you’re looking to save money on your beer purchases, you might want to try the cheapest of the lot: Archa Beer. Look for the blue cans in 7-Eleven. Archa Beer is almost never sold in bars, pubs or clubs. Even the local taxi drivers don’t appear too keen to drink it. It is certainly an acquired taste and it leaves a heavy feeling in one’s stomach, but there are people in Phuket and the rest of Thailand who swear by this beer.

To get into the holiday spirit, nothing beats a can of Phuket Beer. Not only is the can interesting to look at, but the beer is light and fresh and it’s easy to drink a can or two without thinking about it. Phuket Beer is, however, not commonly sold around the island, although you can find it at some expat restaurants and bars.

The recently opened Phuket Brewery on Chalermprakeat R.9 Rd in Kathu actually brews its own beer: Pearl Beer. Phuket Brewery is a huge place where people can eat and drink, and the home brew alone makes it worth a visit.

Then, of course, you have Heineken, Bud, Corona, Carlsberg, Guinness and a bunch of other imports. They are usually more expensive than the aforementioned beers, but it all comes down to preference.

Good luck, beer lovers.

Be Wary of Free Trials of Acai Berry Products

Online scammers have been setting up websites to lure consumers in with “free trial offers” of various acai berry products. With demand for acai berry supplements constantly rising, so has the number of people looking to cash in on the trend. The best way to avoid being scammed when it comes to acai is to stay away from free trial offers and stick with reputable dealers.

The Health Benefits of Beer

Each year more and more studies are being done on the health benefits of beer. While red wine drinkers have been bragging for some time about the benefits of their choice of alcohol, it now seems that beer drinkers will finally get their turn in the spotlight. It is now proven that moderate alcohol consumption is good for heart health, no matter whether you drink beer or wine.

The good news is that moderately consuming alcohol is beneficial for your heart. Moderate drinkers lessen their risk of heart attacks and heart disease, compared to people who don’t drink at all or those who are heavy drinkers. For equal amounts of alcohol, beer has double the antioxidants of white wine, and the antioxidants may be able to be absorbed by the body quicker than those of red wine. Beer contains neither fat nor cholesterol.

Moderate consumption of alcohol is defined as two drinks a day for men and one drink each day for women. Moderate drinkers lowered their risk of heart disease by from between thirty and sixty percent even those who were considered high risk because of a previous heart attack, heart disease, or diabetes. In other studies, beer helped people build bone mass. This is thought to be because of beer’s silicon content.

Beer contains large amounts of antioxidants which prevent cell damage that leads to certain cancers and heart disease. The antioxidants come from the hops and malt used in beer brewing. Other antioxidants, known as polyphenols, which are also found in vegetables, fruits, black and green teas, and wine, are present in beer as well.

In another study that lasted for twelve years, both light and moderate use of beer lowered the risk of diabetes by thirty-six percent. Consuming beer at moderate levels is connected to a reduction in insulin resistance.

In addition, moderate beer consumption is connected to an improvement in memory and thinking abilities. It is hoped that this improvement can help protect people from ischemic stroke, which is responsible for eighty-percent of all stoke cases. It is also possible that the same levels of moderate drinking can help protect us from Alzheimer’s disease and other causes of dementia.

One study conducted at the University of Wisconsin found that these benefits associated with moderate beer consumption, were more present in dark beers than light beers. Guinness stout, for example, has very high levels of flavonoids. These flavonoids were also present in a number of fruits and vegetables but not as much in lighter beers. Guinness stout lowered bad cholesterol levels, and was twice as effective as Heineken, a lighter beer in lowering substances connected to clogged arteries.

While many people have believed for years that beer was as effective as wine in its many health benefits, now these theories are being proven by scientific fact. But while these benefits are tied to moderate consumption of alcohol, they are not tired to over consumption. That means that drinking twice as much is not twice as good for you.

Fabulous Spanish Wines By An Online Wine Merchant From Norwich

Each year, fantastic wines leave Spain to travel around the world and are enjoyed by many. Spain is the third largest wine producing country in the world after France and Italy. Exportation has nearly doubled in the last five years partly due to the change in society in Spain after the death of dictator, Fransisco Franco in 1975, and strict quality control measures being put in place. These quality measures have helped put Spanish wines up there with wines produced from France and Italy.

Organic Beers are Hot!

Organic Beers are Hot!

For the last several years American beer sales have been either slightly falling or at a standstill. One market where that is not the case is organic beers. Even big-time beer giant Anheuser-Busch came out with two organic beers in 2005. Both of them seem to have met with approval from organic consumers.

The labeling of a product as “organic,” means that it must adhere to certain USDA guidelines which were established for all kinds of organic foods in 1997. Organic beer

Reducing Foam From 5 Liter Mini Beer Kegs

Edit Article |

]]>

A big complaint with mini kegs since they have been gaining in popularity is the amount of foam you get with each pour. When you read reviews of min beer dispensers on Amazon they are riddled with this same complaint. In this post I hope to clarify the process of pouring beer from a mini keg to reduce excess foaming.

Step 1. Chill the beer

This is the most important step, warm beer = foamy beer. You do not want to buy a keg the same night you plan on drinking it. Buy it the day before and stick it in the fridge or your mini keg dispenser and let it chill for 10-12 hrs.

Step 2. Pour it clean

Make sure the glass you are using is nice and clean. You don’t want any residue or particles in your beer to disrupt the pour or your beers taste.

Step 3. Pour at an angle

When preparing to pour the beer align your glass at a little more than a 45 degree angle. Angling your glass reduces agitation that will create more foam.

Step 4. Pour it smooth

Pull the tap with one slow smooth motion. Aim the initial pour so it hits the middle of the glass and flows into the bottom of the glass. As the beer pours keep angling the glass till it is almost perpendicular to the keg and then bringing the angle back up as the beer fills.

Step 5. Enjoy Your Fresh Draft Beer

Once you have your full glass with a nice clean pour and about 1-1 ½” of foam on the top its time for that first sip. Skim any excess foam off the top and throw it back. Tastes good doesn’t it?

So there you now have your simple guidelines for pouring the perfect glass from your Heineken mini keg while reducing unwanted foam.

Draught Beer Takes a Big Leap Forward in Thailand

Edit Article |

Posted: Oct 15, 2009 |Comments: 0

]]>

Draught beer and draught cider in Thailand have taken a big step forward in 2009 with the emergence earlier in the year of some top-quality beers from both the United Kingdom, France  and also Australia. Bangkok-based importer Fluid Asia Pacific now has seven high-end beer brands that it is importing from these countries along with two English ciders. Most of these top brands are available in both draught kegs and bottles and the company has more imported draught brands than any other importer in Thailand.

The brands that are now available are Tetley’s Smoothflow, Victoria Pride Bitter, Stowford Press Cider and Weston’s Cider from the U.K., Kronenbourg 1664 beer from France and Foster’s, Victoria Bitter, Crown Lager and Pure Blonde beers from Australia.  And, these brands are available in the major tourist and expatriate communities throughout the country with widespread distribution in greater Bangkok, Pattaya and the eastern seaboard area, Phuket, Samui, Hua Hin and Chiang Mai. There are now several hundred outlets in the country that carry one or more of these brands either in bottles or on draught.

By the end of the year Fluid Asia Pacific will be bringing in even more brands also, with Grolsch beer from the Netherlands and Peroni beer from Italy joining the company’s lineup. This is more good news for premium beer lovers and it may be hard to appreciate why this is so without a bit of explanation about the beer situation here in Thailand.

First, in the early 1930s the government granted a monopoly to one company, Boonrawd Brewery, to brew beer in the country which they did under the brand name of Singha. This monopoly lasted until the mid-70s when several other companies were allowed to establish breweries and foreign beers were gradually allowed to be imported. However, the market is still dominated by Singha, Chang – another Thai brand – and a locally brewed version of Heineken. If one of these beers isn’t one of your favorites then you’re out of luck in many places throughout the country, particularly if you’re somewhat off the beaten path.

Second, many of the companies that import beer into Thailand are small and underfinanced and frequently have supply problems resulting in pubs and restaurants not having stock for periods of time. Also, these companies tend to almost exclusively import bottled beers and not draught. Importing draught beer requires a much bigger expenditure of capital since the shipping of kegs is more expensive and there are high costs associated with providing the draught equipment needed to serve the beer. A more well-funded company like Fluid Asia Pacific has the capital to handle these extra requirements.

Anyway, these are some of the reasons why it’s newsworthy to beer drinkers in Thailand when new brands, especially ones from some expats’ home countries, make it to the Land of Smiles. As time goes by, the beer selection in the kingdom slowly gets better and with the addition of top-quality brands like the ones that Fluid Asia Pacific brings in the lot of beer drinkers here has taken a major step forward in a short period of time.

Draught Beer Takes a Big Leap Forward in Thailand

Backpackers in Thailand; Beer Lao Here Next Year

]]>

The Association of South East Asia Nations (ASEAN) has informed Thailand that it must allow imports of beers brewed in its member countries. The Thai Government has had no choice but to accept.

As a result we expect Laos’s favourite beer, Beer Lao, to have a significant impact on the Thai beer market. The Lao Brewery has previously made several applications to the Thai Government requesting that it allow imports of its product. These have all been rejected, mainly due to powerful lobbying by the 2 major players in the Thai beer market; Thai Bev Corp. and Singha Corp., who between them control around 80% of beer sales in Thailand.

Singha market the top selling brand, Beer Leo (alc. by vol. 5.3). They also have a premium beer, Beer Singha (5.0)

Thai Bev brew Beer Chang (6.4) and a Light version (5.0). Within the last 3 years they have also introduced Beer Archa into the market to try to combat the increasingly popular Leo, but with no significant effect, although it is a nice drink.

Beer in Thailand is still relatively inexpensive. Beer Archa is the cheapest at 32 Baht for a 640 cl bottle, followed by Chang at 40 Baht, Leo at 45 Baht and Singha at 55 Baht.

Heineken brew their premium brand here in Thailand and is popular with those Thais who wish to flaunt their wealth, although I say so with tongue in cheek! But at 75 Baht it’s certainly beyond the pocket of most Thais.

With the Thai beer market opening up next year the two existing combatants will be hard pressed to maintain market share. Certainly the Lao Brewery produces an excellent light lager, which will enter the market at nearer 30 Baht than 40 Baht. It sells in Laos for about 6000 Kip, which translates to 24 Baht. The Singha Corp’s main hope must be the Leo drinkers remain faithful. Thai beer drinkers really would not be successful in a taste test as they fill the glass with ice, over which they pour chilled beer which is so cold when drunk that it numbs lips, mouth, tongue and gums; it’s just too cold to have any flavour.

Meanwhile we beer connoisseurs await the arrival in Thailand of the delightful Beer Lao.

Good backpacking.
