Rugby is hugely popular in Scotland, and the country offers a fantastic experience for fans of the game.

When Scotland hosts a major rugby match, there is a shift in the atmosphere.

The Melrose Sevens, held in Melrose in the Scottish Borders, is the oldest rugby sevens competition, dating back to 1883, and is still an important fixture on the sporting calendar to this day.

Many flagship events take place at the iconic Murrayfield Stadium, in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh.

During key rugby events, the cityâs streets are brimming with excited fans, many dressed in Scottish kilts to mark their allegiance to their team.

DEPENDING on who you speak to, Andy Robinson is a deeply complex character or a straightforward ‘rugby nut’ with no more convoluted a trait than overt passion for the oval-ball sport.

He likes other sports, taught many as a PE teacher in the 1980s, but believes all to be inferior to rugby. He came through a tough apprenticeship in amateur rugby in which he wanted to play in a back row position in which his relatively diminutive size – 5ft 9in and less than 14 stones – did not compute in a world of English giants. But come through it he did, in the openside flanker position he wanted, and to international level.

Had he not it is unlikely we would be here, sitting at Murrayfield Stadium contemplating his first RBS Six Nations Championship as Scotland’s head coach. Intriguing, exhilarating and crushing at times, Robinson’s career has been unique. The past decade alone has witnessed a journey more fascinating than any enjoyed by his predecessors.

The Noughties began with Robinson stepping from Bath to coach in the England camp, moved on with Lions duties in 2001 and 2005, either side of England’s first World Cup triumph in Australia in 2003, fell flat with resignation from the England post in 2006, lifted again with an appointment as Edinburgh coach in 2007 and ended with him back in the Test arena, but this time waving Saltires and developing a quiet, tight-lipped appreciation of O Flower of Scotland.

In this three-part series, we delve into Robinson’s psyche, look back with him to his playing days in an effort to understand what shaped the man and the coach of 2010, dissect an approach to the game built up from nearly 30 years of experience and conclude on Wednesday, the day he names his RBS Six Nations squad, with how he believes Scotland can begin to turn around the disappointments of the past decade.

He starts with a smile. Frank Hadden did the same and it stood him in good stead for his first Six Nations, a carbon copy of Robinson’s opening schedule, which brought three wins. But Robinson could hardly be more different to those that have taken charge of Scotland before him.

The obvious difference is that he is English, born where the cider flows, in Taunton, Somerset. The only other non-Scot to coach the nation’s rugby team since rugby ‘coaches’ first emerged 40 years ago was Matt Williams; a tousy two seasons in 2004-5. Robinson is markedly different to that coach too.

“The key to me I suppose is what’s deep in my soul, my values,” he says. “Firstly, it is to inspire people to be the best they can be, and I have a real passion for that. I enjoyed being a teacher and trying to inspire young people, and then captaining Bath, leading players, and moving into professional rugby.

“Secondly, I have a desire to be the best coach that I can be, which again comes from inside. The other key aspect of my values is the desire to earn the respect of the people I’m working with, and that comes from what you do every day, respecting people and earning their respect, and that is as strong now as it was when I first started out.

“Finally, I enjoy the challenge and there’s no greater challenge than setting your team up and yourself up to play the following week, whether it be Heineken Cup or international rugby where you coach Scotland to play five different teams in the Six Nations.

“To me, rugby is the greatest game you can play because of the physical challenge. You have to be able to deal with that. A lot of teams will lose and not have the consistency because they can’t front up week in week out. A team will win one week and then lose because they can’t deliver that the following week, and that is something we are working hard on with the Scottish players and teams.”

There are many sides to consistency on the field of play, preparation, basic skills and mental approach being other key contributors, but it is revealing that Robinson seizes on the physical aspect. Clearly, that has always attracted Robinson as past teammates recall a terrier-like “little bastard” – that word is used frequently by those who played against him – who seemed to live for confrontation.

He needed that, the determination, inner steel and self-belief for the challenges that lay between him and the top of the game, but the battles also moulded him.

“I was constantly told I would play hooker, that I wasn’t big enough or good enough to play anywhere else. I began to realise then that I had to be different; that I had to be the fittest player on the pitch and have the highest work-rate if I was to survive and get the chance to do the job.

“I first joined Bath in 1985 (the year after they won their first national silverware], while in my third year at uni, and then got my first PE job at Radstock Ridlington Comprehensive in Bath. I was 22 then, but at Bath I was up against the club captain Roger Spurrell (ex-paratrooper] for the openside berth.

“But in those days there was a lot of rugby, and a lot of opportunity. There was not yet an official championship in England, but a merit table, and Bath played twice a week. I made my debut in 1986 against Pontypool, and we claimed their long-running home record, then beat Leicester 6-3, then Newport on Wednesday and Llanelli Scarlets on Saturday.

“We trained Mondays, played Tuesdays or Wednesdays, trained Thursdays and played Saturday, and at a club like Bath you had to deliver in every game. The A team had a strong fixture list too, which meant some training sessions were harder than some games.”

That provides a vivid picture of the competitiveness in English rugby more than 20 to 30 years ago, and yet England were second-best to Scotland for much of the early 1980s and, from this side of Hadrian’s Wall, appeared to lack the fitness of sides featuring Roy Laidlaw, John Rutherford, the Hastings brothers and John Jeffrey, to name a few.

Robinson says the view was similar from the south, and, furthermore, believes that this was another reason why he made it in the game.

“Players becoming really fit was probably the next stage for the game in England to go to in that mid to late 80s period, but that suited me because it gave me a bit of an edge on some of the forwards around at the time.

“I had to work out how I could get past the guys around me. I was on the bench for an England trial before the Six Nations in 1988, and Gary Rees was up against Peter Winterbottom, and I studied those two through the game. I tried to work out how I could be as good as them and what extra I could bring.

“One of the key points was being fitter, so that I could do things or be places they couldn’t. There was a confidence about England then that we could play. I made my debut on the tour to Australia in 1988, and we lost, but I remember them coming here that autumn and we won handsomely (28-19] with guys like the Underwoods (Tony and Rory] and Jerry Guscott coming through, a captain in Will Carling, and a pack that could win ball.

“The big step was generating mobility in that pack, so England needed fit forwards. It came, Wade Dooley developed and became a force, Mike Teague came through and Peter went to Harlequins and that made him as a player, developing his handling skills and open play.

“I was involved in the 12-12 draw with Scotland in 1989 and that really opened my eyes to the speed the game was played at with Scotland. There was complete chaos throughout the whole game. I had thought Australia were very quick but it was even quicker against Scotland – balls being kicked out of rucks, so much loose play – and also there was a level of physicality that the Scottish guys brought to it. They were cracking games to play in.”

Now a key figure in Bath’s dominance of the English game, Robinson toured with the 1989 British and Irish Lions to Australia, but found himself behind skipper Finlay Calder in the race for the No7 jersey. He still played in six non-Test matches and believes he learned a lot about international rugby and the Scottish ethos from the time spent with Calder, Jeffrey, David Sole and others, and the coaching of Ian McGeechan.

It also shaped his thinking on how to blend two nations’ preferences for rucking and mauling and how to balance differing styles with which to attack teams. He cites good New Zealand sides, who could maul and ruck, and talks in depth about French teams who had the dynamism to really hurt opponents.

In 1989 Robinson was voted ‘European Player of the Year’, but was injured and fell out of the Test picture, having to wait 50 internationals before winning his eighth and final cap, six years later.

But for all the agonies suffered trying to alter that stark fact, and from the knowledge that pours forth in discussion of his playing days, and his undoubted 24/7 commitment to the game, life outside rugby has also shaped Robinson. He does not offer it up, but will talk about the influence of his father, Ray, the impact on him of his father’s battle with multiple sclerosis; a man of 36, talented all-round sportsman gradually struck down with the disease to the extent that he was confined to a wheelchair and blind.

Ray remained a regular supporter of his son and Bath, where he would have a guide at the Recreation Ground to talk him through the game and then offer his son some words of criticism, and encouragement, afterwards. He died in 2001, aged 61, but remains an inspiration to the now 45-year-old Robinson.

A legendary Scot was also a crucial figure in his early learning, the former Scotland back row and captain Jim Greenwood, who helped pull Scotland from its worst run of defeats (17) in the 1950s. Robinson, it appears, was one of many coaches in whom Greenwood cultivated a deep appreciation of and love for rugby while a student at Loughborough University.

“That was a great place for me to learn,” says Robinson, his eyes glistening and smile widening at the memory. “I was lectured by Jim. He was fantastic.

“He’s a great man, very softly spoken and a fantastic rugby coach who was so far ahead of his time it was incredible. He is a man who has an aura about him. I remember him lecturing me on the culture of Japan, where he spent time coaching, the sporting culture of America, as well as what was going on here of course. There’s no doubt that he fuelled the desire in me.”

Robinson continues: “I have fed off many things, as everyone does. In rugby, I have learned something from every coach I worked with, and players.

“After I was injured in 1989, I realised when I was out that I had become too worried about becoming bigger, about the way I though had to play, rather than just focusing on me playing the way that suited me.

“I was never going to be 6ft 3in, or play like someone that size, so I had to understand I had to play more my way. That was when I played at my best, post-that, 91, 92, with ball in hand, good support play; I just went out and played.

“I began to spend most of my time working with the backs at Bath, where Brian Ashton was working on running lines, handling, putting myself under that pressure, so I could support the backs right through games.

“It was an understanding that…” he laughs, “probably that lineouts were boring! To be honest, I’m staggered even now to see the number of lineouts that openside flankers jump in, particularly when they’re winning the ball off the top – the first focus has to be on that first ruck and who’s going to win it.

“I try to explain that to the guys who lead the lineout. I expect the openside to be there to win that first ball or receive the off-load, for the speed of ball we need. That’s an utterly important part of what we do.”

That transference of knowledge from Test player to Test coach marks Robinson out from recent Scotland coaches. Whether he feels the need to talk more about his learning from Scots to engender support in his new habitat or not, it is clear he has always had a respect for Scottish rugby which makes his move north less of a mystery.

NATHAN HINES today delved into his rugby league background to provide inside track on one of the most controversial players to grace the RBS Six Nations.

Expected to gain a ninth cap at stand-off for Italy in Rome on Saturday is 31-year-old Australian-born Craig Gower, a virtual unknown in union circles before making his debut last summer – except to the likes of Hines, who was also born in Australia and came across Gower in the 13-a-side code there.

Hines was born in Wagga Wagga and moved to Scotland in 1998 where he took advantage of ancestry qualifications.

He said: “Craig was at Penrith Panthers when I was at the Bears and although he was a year younger I learned how he was being earmarked even as a teenager to become a Kangaroo. His breakthrough into top grade rugby league came early.”

In fact Gower went on to captain those Kangaroos before his career dramatically changed codes with an offer to join the French rugby union club, Aviron Bayonnais in 2007. It was a fresh start for Gower who left Australia after a string of alcohol-related misdemeanours. He qualifies for Italy thanks to an Italian grandfather.

“All the focus is on getting a win this weekend but that still shouldn’t obscure two tremendous achievement. I’d like to think when you make that number of appearances you are recognised as having made a contribution although it is mainly later that you look back on things like that.”

As for Hines being able to get insight through playing club rugby at Leinster who are chock-a-block with Irish internationalists, many of whom were in action against Italy at the start of the current series, he insists dialogue is always limited when it comes to exchanging notes.

“It’s maybe strange but at Leinster there is rarely a lot of chat about the international scene although, when Scotland beat Australia last Autumn, that did merit a few ‘well dones’.

Perhaps that is because Hines and his mates have been pre-occupied with their defence of the Heineken European Cup – they host Clermont Auvergne in the quarter-finals – while a recent 30-0 win over Munster was a highlight of his time in the Irish capital, so far.

The intensive schedule can take its toll, though, culminating in that ankle injury which provoked his absence from the Cardiff clash and opened a door for Jim Hamilton who retains his place.

“There was a time when I played when I maybe should have rested and against France I aggravated swelling in my ankle joints.

“It presented itself as a calf strain but as that subsided my ankle became sore.

“I learned my lesson from playing when I probably should have pulled out and I have now had two injections in my ankle so feel really good to go.”

Brian Moore was an integral part of England’s formidable pack of the late 1980s and early 90s, helping the side to three Grand Slams in five years.

Moore, won 64 England caps, and five for the British and Irish Lions, and played in the 1991 World Cup final. He was a fierce competitor, who enjoyed winding up the opposition. He’s mellower now, but only marginally.

He thinks England, under Martin Johnson, need consistency if they are to do well.

He said: “England could be there or thereabouts or they could be very mediocre. It depends how and what their selection process is and whether they can get some stability, because if they do they’ve got the talent to do well. If they don’t it will be the same old story and they’ll be scratching around and it will be difficult.

“They keep making changes which tends not to produce great results. The autumn internationals were dire. There hasn’t been a legacy since winning the World Cup in 2003 and it’s a huge shame. We weren’t blind enough to think it would carry on and on but I didn’t expect us to be where we are.”

He said: “Ireland should be red hot favourites. They’ve got all the talent and their top players seem to be playing well in the Heineken Cup. They don’t seem to have any injury worries and they’ve got the best back up they’ve ever had on the back of a Grand Slam.

“The only thing I would say is the second one is harder, but they should be favourites. And you should never discount the French because you don’t know what they can do.

“The Six Nations always throws a surprise up. You generally see something so it will be good.”

Throughout his highly successful playing career Moore practiced as a solicitor. Most of his international colleagues also combined jobs with rugby commitments and Moore is convinced it helped mould them into more rounded characters.

He has a theory that modern players, all full-time professionals, suffer as a result of having nothing other than rugby to consider, reflected in poor decision making on the field.

He said: “I don’t think the fact that people do anything apart from rugby is good for character. It’s not good for taking responsibility on the field when things go wrong, because you don’t learn it anywhere else.

“You are constantly in camp or training and people are coaching you all the time. Sometimes, to get that mind set, you need to be left on your own to get on with it.

“It’s about taking responsibility. When you were used to doing that in your everyday life it wasn’t such a chore, it wasn’t such a big thing.”

The former hooker, who played for Nottingham, Harlequins and Richmond, feels the modern game is losing its appeal with laws constantly being meddled with.

He said: “Problems have come because I’m not sure the lawmakers know exactly what they are doing. This thing at the tackle, allowing defenders to keep hold of the ball, shifts the balance slightly.

“But in professional terms it’s a lot because they know how to do it and that margin is everything. It’s a combination of things, really.

“The skill set I had as a hooker has largely gone now because the referees have messed around with the laws, without being authorised to do so.

“I’d find it frustrating to play now because my skill set is largely redundant. I could still throw in, though.

“Then there’s the size issue. I used to get away with being small because I was technically very good, but it’s not technical anymore, it’s power in the scrums.

The hosts are second, five points ahead of Sarries, which makes this match at Franklins Gardens one neither team can afford to lose because finishing in the top two earns home advantage in the play-off semi-finals.

England team manager Martin Johnson sees Hartley as his first-choice hooker going into next year’s World Cup. However, the Northampton captain is error prone and was yellow-carded for killing the ball in last weekend’s win over Gloucester.

Most damningly, Hartley has failed to live up to his billing as a livewire operator in the loose at Test level and with Brits playing world-class rugby, the comparison could be damaging.

Brits, who knows playing for Sarries is harming his chances of being part of South Africa’s World Cup defence in New Zealand, believes his particular attributes pace and handling skills – are now being recognised in England because the grounds are harder and Sarries have embraced a more expansive game plan.

And although he is not 100 per cent satisfied with the team’s play, his own performances in last Saturday’s 37-18 destruction of Harlequins at Wembley, where he played like an extra back row forward and landed a try, does not bode well for Hartley.

“We are scoring more tries but we still have to get the set piece right,” said Brits. “I have played against Dylan twice and he is a very good player, a great competitor and this is a massive game for both teams.

“We have already qualified for the Heineken Cup and that will be something special to experience next season but we still have a lot to play for in this campaign and our ambition is to win the Premiership title.

“We have created winning momentum and the rugby here is similar in terms of pace to Super 14 but with more of a feudal edge, with the set piece absolutely vital.

“If I can provide a bit of magic to make that happen, then I will be very happy and I am ready to do whatever is necessary to make Sarries successful.”

Brits’ Sarries prevailed when the teams met in the Premiership back in September, winning 19-16 in the first of four matches his club hosted at Wembley this term.

It’s London Wasps’ turn to take to the big stage tomorrow when, despite being the latest club to reveal financial problems, they will draw a 60,000 crowd to Twickenham for what is being billed as the St George’s Day clash with fellow play-off hopefuls Bath.

If fourth-placed Wasps win, they will move closer to securing a top-four finish to make the end-of-season play-offs and the excitement generated by the climax to the Premiership campaign is proving the sport can compete against football’s elite when it comes to attracting a crowd.

Fifth-placed London Irish are still smarting after a shock 23-13 home defeat by Leeds and Mike Catt admits the club’s season-long battle with
serious injury has disrupted the campaign.

The backs coach believes the squad will be stronger for the experience, however, and he still expects the players to compete fiercely for a potential top-four finish.

Irish are at Gloucester tomorrow still missing No8 Chris Hala’Ufia, who is serving a three-match ban to compound their squad problems.

“His loss means other players have to step up to the mark, which has been the case throughout the season. We are now in a position where we have to win against Gloucester and Northampton and see where it takes us in the table.”

Harlequins are hoping Nick Evans is fit to return at No10 for their hugely difficult assignment at Premiership leaders Leicester and there is a real danger the club may not win again this season because their final match is at home against a Sale side that may need a victory to stay up.

One of the oldest clichés in the book, ‘so near and yet so far’, will have been of little solace to Wales this week after their latest false start against the All Blacks yielded a demoralising 42-9 thumping in Dunedin last weekend.

Warren Gatland’s tourists have another shot at overturning their losing streak, now at 22 Tests and 57 years, in his hometown of Hamilton on Saturday but will need to show greater finishing prowess as well as proving that they can live with their hosts for a full 80 minutes.

The scoreline at Carisbrook did not reflect the balance of the game, particularly the competitiveness of the Welsh challenge in the first-half, but did underline the gulf in class between the sides when it comes to playing at pace and producing quick ball.

As he has been in so many of his 68 Tests, Dan Carter was superb at the helm of the All Blacks’ effort and with his pack producing wave after wave of counter-attacking ball his 27-point haul, including two brilliant tries, proved to be the major difference.

Carter is back for more this time around after coming through training although lingering doubts over a calf problem mean that his place could be taken at the 11th hour by Hurricanes youngster Aaron Cruden. Opposing Carter will be 20-year-old Welshman Dan Biggar, who faces comfortably the largest challenge of his young Test career.

His two previous starts, both in 2009, came against Canada and Samoa although he has been an ever-present for the Ospreys this season, starting their crunch Heineken Cup games against Leicester and Biarritz as well as the Magners League Grand Final victory over Leinster.

Biggar will benefit from familiarity with his scrum-half, Ospreys colleague Mike Phillips, and has been a regular member of the squad, including the Six Nations, since his debut in 2008. The only other change for the tourists comes in the centre, where another youngster, the Scarlets’ Jonathan Davies, replaces the injured Andrew Bishop.

Worryingly for Gatland’s charges, the All Blacks’ coaches have opted to flex their selection muscles and introduce a host of hungry talent. With the impressive Israel Dagg ruled out due to concussion, 82-Test veteran Mils Muliaina is given a chance to prove his fitness at fullback while flying winger Zac Guildford has been hammering on the door for some game-time since the start of the international season.

Injury has also struck centre Conrad Smith, meaning a start for Richard Kahui on his home ground and a chance to add another five points to his record after picking up a solo effort last weekend. The Franks brothers, Owen and Ben, got their teeth into Wales in Dunedin but have made way for the return match, with Tony Woodcock and Neemia Tialata getting a shot at loose-head and tight-head respectively. In the second-row there is a welcome return for Tom Donnelly prior to the Tri-Nations while Jerome Kaino has recovered from injury to add extra steel to the back-row alongside skipper Richie McCaw and No.8 Kieran Read.

The Welsh back-row remains unchanged, with Gavin Thomas getting a second crack at McCaw, and they will need to show considerable improvement if they are to stop the supply of possession at source. The conspicuous carries of Bradley Davies and skipper Ryan Jones disappeared in the second half of the last meeting as the All Blacks strode clear and Wales must attempt to match fire with fire as the clock ticks on.

Wales were accused in some quarters of lacking the fitness to stick with the fresh and firing All Blacks last weekend and the camp will be all-too-aware that they need to put in their first 80-minute performance of the season if they are to cause a major upset.

“The thing about New Zealand is that whatever you achieve outside this country, unless you perform here, you don’t earn the respect of the New Zealand public or the New Zealand media, that’s just a reality,” Gatland said.

“Whatever you’ve achieved in the northern hemisphere, whatever you’ve won as a player or a coach, unless you can come to New Zealand and win, or at least push a team right to the limit, then you don’t leave this country with the respect of the people and that’s important to us.”

Their coach wants respect from his countrymen, but do Wales have the belief to make New Zealand sit up and take notice?

Rugby union is a popular sport in Italy. The sport is thought to have been introduced to the country in the early 1900s, with an organisational committee being established in 1911. The Super 10 competition is the main club rugby competition in the country, although clubs also participate in Europe’s Heineken Cup. Italy compete annually in the Six Nations Championship, and have competed at the Rugby World Cup.

Italy is classified as a tier one nation by the International Rugby Board. The governing body of Italian rugby union is the Federazione Italiana Rugby (FIR). An original organisational committee was established in 1911, although it was in 1928 when the body became the FIR, and in 1987, they joined the International Rugby Board. In 1934 the FIR became founding members of the Federation Internationale de Rugby Amateur. Rugby union in the United States is a growing national sport. It is played at the youth, high school, club, semi-professional, and international levels. The United States is a Tier 2 rugby nation, as defined by the International Rugby Board, which means that it is not currently competitive at the elite level of the sport, but is one of the IRB’s key development markets. The game was first introduced to the United States in the mid nineteenth century.

The sport gained popularity throughout the late Nineteenth Century, however it started to decline from the early 1900s. Its growth collapsed in the country after the 1924 Olympics, and did not re-emerge until its renaissance in the 1960s. The United States of America Rugby Football Union (now known as USA Rugby) was formed in 1975. The Rugby Super League is a semi-professional competition that was created in 1996 by the major TAU’s within USA Rugby with the intention of creating a competitive national competition. The competition currently involves 14 teams in two conferences. The inclusion of some sub-par clubs and the exclusion of top-performing clubs has been a controversial issue since the inception of the Super League, calling into question whether it is really USA’s “premier” competition.

ROSS RENNIE has vowed to repay Edinburgh Rugby coaches for taking a “handle with care” approach as he battled back from long-term knee damage.

The impending start of the season sees the 24-year-old international flanker ready to hit the ground running and finally hoping that a series of injury problems have finally been banished.

It was towards the end of 2008, the year in which he gained his only cap so far, that Rennie succumbed to a knock that was to put him out for almost a year and necessitate trips to a specialist in Vermont, United States, for treatment.

That journey alone indicates the value Edinburgh place on Rennie but significantly his return, starting with a Heineken European Cup victory over Bath in a Murrayfield snow storm, saw him eased back gently.

Initially, he sat out the two subsequent matches following a break of one game as the campaign neared its end he then made four successive appearances helped by an erratic schedule due to the Six Nations Championship.

Rugby Hospitality

At the time, Edinburgh coach Rob Moffat said: “Ross’s injury has been well documented and we want to make sure he gets through this season and recovers. We err on the safe side but he is getting through games and training well.”

Of course, what Rennie refers to as a “niggle” affecting his other knee put paid to his season two matches prematurely but, nevertheless, it was surely highly revealing that whenever Ross was available, Moffat put him straight into the starting line-up.

Speaking as he prepared to enter the Palace of Holyrood House to represent his club as one of a number of local dignitaries invited to present Duke of Edinburgh awards, Rennie’s remarks contained a strong element of loyalty to his Capital rugby roots.

“Last year was a battle involving several niggles which, hopefully, I have now overcome. Throughout a difficult period I was handled superbly.

“I could have been thrown back in once I was passed fit but, instead, Edinburgh, Rob Moffat and others looked after me really, really well.

The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) (Irish: Cumann Rugbaí na hÉireann) is the body managing rugby union in Ireland. The IRFU has its head office and grounds at Aviva Stadium, where Irish rugby union international matches are played. In addition, the Union also owns Ravenhill in Belfast, Thomond Park in Limerick and a number of grounds in provincial areas that have been rented to clubs.

Rugby union is a popular sport in Italy. The sport is thought to have been introduced to the country in the early 1900s, with an organisational committee being established in 1911. The Super 10 competition is the main club rugby competition in the country, although clubs also participate in Europe’s Heineken Cup. Italy compete annually in the Six Nations Championship, and have competed at the Rugby World Cup. Italy is classified as a tier one nation by the International Rugby Board.
The governing body of Italian rugby union is the Federazione Italiana Rugby (FIR). An original organisational committee was established in 1911, although it was in 1928 when the body became the FIR, and in 1987, they joined the International Rugby Board. In 1934 the FIR became founding members of the Federation Internationale de Rugby Amateur.

They started in the so-called “Group of death” with hosts France, Argentina, Namibia and Georgia in the 2007 World Cup. They played Namibia (the lowest ranked team in the World cup) in their opening game on September 9 which resulted in a narrow 32-17 win. Their progress was then put into doubt when they beat Georgia 14-10, not obtaining a bonus point. France’s victory over Namibia 87-10 put Ireland’s progression from the group in doubt, and this was compounded when the French defeated Ireland 25-3. Entering their last group match against Argentina, needing four tries to secure a bonus point without allowing Argentina anything, Ireland were defeated by 30 points to 15 and crashed out at the pool stage for the first time.

Ireland’s highest ever position in the IRB World Rankings is third which they reached in 2003 and 2006. They currently lie in fifth position as of 18 February 2010 after their defeat by France in the Six Nations.

The Rugby World Cup is held every four years, and tends to alternate between the northern and southern hemispheres. Every northern hemisphere tournament so far has been held in Europe, and in general, Wales usually hosts some games when it is held there.

1991 Rugby World Cup

England was main host in 1991, but other countries hosted some matches. Pool C, which Wales was a part of, had all their games in Cardiff, with two taken to Pontypridd and one played in Llanelli.

1999 Rugby World Cup

Wales was main host in 1999. Wales won the right to host the World Cup in 1999. The centrepiece venue for the tournament was the Millennium Stadium, built on the site of the old National Stadium at Cardiff Arms Park at a cost of 126 million from private investment. Other venues in Wales were the Racecourse Ground and Stradey Park. An agreement was reached so that the other unions in the Five Nations Championship (England, France, Ireland and Scotland) also hosted matches.

The 1999 World Cup was hosted by Wales with some matches spread across Scotland, England, Ireland and France. The format of the pool games was similar to the 1991 World Cup in England. All Pool A games were held in Scotland, Pool B games in England, Pool C games in France and Pool D games were all held in Wales. Second round play-offs and the quarter-finals were held a variety of European venues, the semi-finals were held at Twickenham Stadium, London. The third place play-off and the final were held at the new Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
